UFC 140 Headliner Goes to Jones vs Machida for LHW Title.
On October 5, the MMA community was buzzing with the rumor that the long awaited grudge match between reigning champion Jon "Bones" Jones (14-1-0) and #1 contender "Sugar" Rashad Evans (16-1-1) was to finally take place at UFC 140 as the main event. UFC President was quick to silence those rumors that same day. The next day October 6, White announced that Evans would unfortunately have to sit on the sidelines once again due to an injury to his right hand he received during his recent rematch against fellow former division champion Tito Ortiz at UFC 133: Evans vs Ortiz II where he earned #1 contendership for a second time with a Rnd2 TKO. While the injury was perceived to be minor, it appears that the timetable that the UFC has in place for Jones demands that he stay active, and it now looks like the injury was more serious than originally anticipated. With Evans injured and unable to return to action as soon as he had hoped, the UFC has decided to replace him in his bout with Jones with fellow former division champion Lyoto "The Dragon" Machida (17-2-0). Machida jumped back into the winners' column and possibly saved his UFC career with a Rnd2 KO of former 5x Light Heavyweight/Heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer Randy Couture at UFC 129: St. Pierre vs Shields. Jones vs Machida will serve as the main event still for UFC 140 as the second card the promotion has held there Toronto since the sport's legalization in the Canadian province. This match up alone sets the tone for the card with Machida seen by many as the one fighter with the style that could give Jones the most trouble. This event now has a stacked roster of fights lined up to be confirmed with the Light Heavyweight title bout between reigning champion Jones and former champion Machida, the long anticipated rematch between former 2x UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir and former PrideFC and former UFC Interim Heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, an interesting Light Heavyweight match up with former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz taking on former PrideFC star Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Featherweight contender Mark Hominick taking on fan favorite Chan Sung Jung, and rising Welterweight star Rory MacDonald facing dangerous veteran Brian Ebersole. UFC 140: Jones vs Machida is already shaping up to be an entertaining card that will lead up to the final card of the year UFC 141: Lensar vs Overeem.
