Melendez Calls For Challengers From UFC, So Why Not?
Immediately in the cage following his third straight consecutive title defense, Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert "El Nino" Melendez stated that he was alright with remaining in the promotion for how ever long the plan is to keep him there, but would like Zuffa to steer some high level challengers his way to test him so he can prove his claims to be true, declaring himself as the #1 Lightweight in the sport. Melendez has fought in Strikeforce since 2006 and has remained loyal to the promotion that has helped promote him as one of the best Lightweights ever to compete in the sport. Melendez holds a record of 20-2-0, avenging both losses in in the "hexagon" against Mitsuhiro Ishida and longtime rival Josh Thomson which combine with his current six fight win streak. Since jumping into the spotlight in the sport as the reigning Lightweight champion in the #2 North American MMA promotion, Melendez has called for recognition as the best and repeatedly issued challenges to fight the best the UFC has to offer, especially since the UFC's parent company Zuffa purchased Strikeforce early in 2011 and hoped that a unification bout between the promotions would happen as soon as possible. Coupled with the recent announcement that Strikeforce would remain on Showtime with a new deal in 2012, it was announced that all fighters still under contract with the promotion would remain under their employment, which includes Melendez and the other three remaining champions in the promotion. With a small roster of Lightweights, there are few challengers to step up and test Melendez to his fullest capabilities, and sometimes trying to rush a certain challenger into title contention results with that fighter either losing just before getting his title shot or not performing to the best of their capabilities.
With few challengers to promote into the big spotlight and garner a large audience, Melendez has called for the UFC to possibly send in some of their top talent in against him so he can prove he is worthy of the elite status he feels he has earned. Two names that have come up among fan discussions have been perennial contender and TUF1 finalist Kenny Florian, and TUF5 alumni Gray Maynard who is the only fighter at this time to hold a win over reigning UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. Melendez has even picked specific fighters from the top of the UFC Lightweight division claiming to be superior to them, comparing himself to final WEC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis who was next in line for a shot at the UFC title before having to wait and take another fight, and former WEC champion Benson Henderson who is currently the #1 Lightweight contender and will face champion Frankie Edgar in February, claiming that he has done more deserve a shot at the title than they have at all. With few contenders on the Strikeforce roster, sending over mid-level or rising talent from the UFC's extensive Lightweight roster could be a good move for Zuffa to make. With Strikeforce expected to eventually fold into the UFC along with their champions at that time and rosters, ensuring that those champions are well promoted prior to the eventual unification bouts would be a good business move ensuring more PPV buys for an event that should garner a lot of attention, especially from the hardcore MMA fan base.

4 Bouts On UFC 142 Card Suffer Injuries
Though events taking place outside of the United States tend to garner less attraction from fans and press in the MMA community, UFC 142: Aldo vs Mendes was one that the hardcore community was really excited for. Even with the UFC Featherweight title bout headlining the card and the main event pitting a former champion against a powerful debuting Middleweight, many hardcore fans were actually more interested in bouts involving debuting fighters and prospects that show great promise. The card however has suffered a lineup change involving four bouts where one fighter in each pulled out due to injury. Bouts affected include:
Pyle vs Thiago
Silva vs Bahadurzada
Oliveira vs Broughton
Maldonado vs Nedkov
Of these bouts, Paulo Thiago, Siyar Bahadurzada, Rob Broughton, and Stanislov Nedkov have all pulled out of the event, leaving Mike Pyle, Erick Silva, Ednaldo Oliveira, and Fabio Maldonado in need of replacement opponents or be pulled from the card. Shortly after news broke that these bouts had been affected, it was announced that former Heavyweight contender and elite BJJ practitioner Gabriel Gonzaga was slated to make his return to the UFC to take on Oliveira as a late replacement. Gonzaga makes his return to the octagon following a rebound win with a Rnd3 Submission victory over Parker Porter to win the Reality Fighting Heavyweight title in recently in October, which was his first win since August 2009, and his first fight a year after being released from the UFC. At this time there are no other fighters announced to replace other injured competitors in the three remaining bouts for this card.

UFC 143 Gets HW Bout: Werdum vs Nelson
Reported by MMAWeekly.com, a heavyweight bout is now expected to take place as part of the main vard for UFC 143: Diaz vs Condit when credentialed BJJ black belt Fabricio Werdum takes on fellow BJJ clack belt and TUF10 winner Roy Nelson. Werdum will come into this bout following what some fans consider a controversial Unanimous Decision loss to Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem as part of the quarterfinals in the Heavyweight Grand Prix at Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum II that snapped a three fight win streak, which included being the first fighter to own a definitive win over longtime consensus #1 Heavyweight Fedor Elelianenko. Nelson will come into this bout off a rebound Rnd3 TKO win over veteran Mirko Cro-Cop at UFC 137: Penn vs Diaz that snapped a two fight losing streak, which included a Unanimous Decision loss to Junior dos Santos for #1 contendership in the division that earned him great respect and a Unanimous Decision loss to former Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Being a big name in Strikeforce having been the first fighter in almost ten years to own a victory over Emelianenko, being a veteran of the sport, and being a highly recognized BJJ practitioner in the sport, Werdum is a big catch from Strikeforce making his return to the UFC since being released in late 2008. Nelson is a veteran himself recognized as a strong BJJ practitioner, was the inaugural and only IFL Heavyweight champion, and has made himself a popular figure in MMA with his personality and endurance being one of only two fighters to go the full distance with powerful knock out specialist Junior dos Santos.
At this time, the main card for UFC 143: Diaz vs Condit stands now with three bouts, with others still rumored or not yet confirmed to be part of the main card.
Main Card bouts:
Main Event (Interim Welterweight Title bout): Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit
Co-Main Event: Josh Koscheck vs Mike Pierce
Fabricio Werdum vs Roy Nelson

It Is Official: The Flyweight Division Makes Debut with 4-Man Tournament
The long rumored and much anticipated inclusion of the the Flyweight (125lbs and below) division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been made official, making it the eighth division under the promotion's roster. at the post-fight conference for UFC 140: Jones vs Machida, UFC President Dana White announced during the conference that the division will make its promotional debut with a four-man tournament as part of the UFC On FX 2 card. The two semifinal bouts will be the first tournament bouts to be part of a UFC card since the late 1990s, minus the finals of TUF. The fighters involved in the two bouts will be TPF Flyweight champion Ian McCall (11-2-0) taking on now former Bantamweight contender Demetrious Johnson (14-2-0), and now former Bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez (15-2-0) taking on Shooto Bantamweight (123lb) champion Yasuhiro Urushitani (19-4-6). Both McCall and Urushitani will vacate their titles to become official UFC fighters and be eligible to compete in the Flyweight tournament. McCall will come into the bout recognized as the #1 Flyweight in the world riding a four fight win streak with his previous bout being a Rnd3 Submission over Darrel Montague at TPF 10 to become the TPF Flyweight champion, the most recognized of the division's titles being the only one in the United States, while Johnson will come into the bout following a Unanimous Decision loss to reigning UFC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz where he presented a tough challenge to the larger opponent when striking, but was outmatched in strength and size when going for takedowns and clinching which resulted in him being taken down and controlled for much of the fight. Benavidez comes into his bout riding a three fight win streak with his only two professional losses coming by way of Unanimous and Split Decision to reigning Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and his most recent bout being an impressive Unanimous Decision win over former WEC Bantamweight champion Eddie Wineland at UFC Live 5: Hardy vs Lytle where he outmatched him with his speed, while Urushitani will come into this bout riding a five fight win streak that includes winning the Shooto Bantamweight (123lb) title and defending it in his most recent bout with a Rnd3 TKO over Yuki Shoujou at Shooto-Shootor's Legacy 3. Both bouts will act as semifinals with the winners moving on later in the year to fight for the inaugural UFC Flyweight championship title. These bouts will mark the Flyweight debuts of both Johnson and Benavidez who have been fighting at Bantamweight during their careers due to the fact that there were no major and high paying promotions that featured the Flyweight division, and accepted fighting opponents who usually had distinct height, strength, and reach advantages. Both Johnson and Benavidez competed in the WEC and were brought to the UFC when the promotion was fully absorbed. With Johnson and Benavidez dropping down to their more natural weight agains tmore equally sized opponents, there will likely be more Bantamweights on the UFC roster and outside the promotion looking to make the extra 10lb drop where they can now compete on a much more level playing field against matching opponents. With the introduction of this new weight class on the sport's biggest stage, fans can expect to be treated to some of the fastest paced action ever seen in the sport's history competing at the highest level in competition.

UFC May Finally Bringing in Flyweight Division. Announcement Coming Soon.
The long awaited inclusion of the Flyweight division under the Zuffa banner is finally going to be made official. This comes after the first ever inclusion of the Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions in the recent TUF14 season where the fast paced action of the lighter classes was put on display resulting in one of the best seasons ever in the short history of the reality competition series. This comes several months after UFC President Dana White said he was interested in bringing the division to the promotion following the absorption of the Featherweight and Bantamweight classes from World Extreme Cagefighting. During the existence of the WEC, a promotion bought by Zuffa that acted as the primary stage for the two weight classes and a separate roster of Lightweights, the request from fans to adopt the Flyweight division (125lbs and below) was a frequent question to promotion president Reed Harris. Harris had said multiple times that the promotion was interested and even planning on adopting the weight class in the future, but the announcement that the promotion was to be fully absorbed into the UFC with the full rosters of fighters under contract made fans question whether the Flyweight division would ever find the big stage in the sport. The inclusion of this lighter weight class would open a big opportunity to fighters in the Bantamweight division who can finally fight at their natural weight against opponents more their size. Top Bantamweights like Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez have always been underdogs to many of their opponents and usually at times have a significant height and strength disadvantage, though have persevered in the weight class . Because the Flyweight division was never on the big stages like in the UFC or WEC, the chance at earning a decent living in the sport while competing at their natural weight was highly unlikely and forced them to fight against larger opponents in the meantime. This is comparable to reigning Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar whose natural size makes him a Featherweight, but at the time he started his career the UFC did not have that weight class and chose to fight as a Lightweight, rather than at Featherweight and fight in the WEC, where he has had significant height and strength disadvantages multiple times while always having the speed advantage with his smaller size, and has persevered to defeat every opponent he has ever fought winning the UFC title and even still being the underdog when defending it. The inclusion of the Flyweight division would be perfect, allowing multiple Bantamweights to drop down to a more comfortable and even field, allow Bantamweights and competing Flyweights outside the promotion to finally reach the big stage where they can start earning more money and showcase their talents to a wider audience, and deliver even more fast paced action to the fans with future UFC cards being presented on multiple platforms on FOX, FX, FUEL TV, and still on PPV.

3 Main Card Bouts Official For UFC On FOX 2
Three bouts for the main card of UFC On FOX 2 have been confirmed with major title implications in two divisions. The main event will pit TUF2 winner and former Light Heavyweight champion Rashad Evans (16-1-1) against 4x NCAA1 Penn. State All-American collegiate wrestler Phil Davis (9-0-0). The co-main event will be a Middlweight bout pitting top contender and elite wrestler Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) against heavy handed fellow former collegiate wrestler Mark Munoz (12-2-0). And the second bout on the card will be another Middleweight bout pitting TUF3 winner Michel Bisping (22-3-0) against elite third degree BJJ black belt Demian Maia (15-3-0). Each of these three bouts will have major significance in both the Light Heavyweight and Middleweight divisions for the title pictures. For Evans vs Davis, should Evans wins he is guaranteed his long awaited title shot that has been postponed repeatedly which will happen against the winner of Jon Jon vs Lyoto Machida for the title at UFC 140, while Davis will likely be one or two more fights away from a title shot with a victory over Evans. For Sonnen vs Munoz, the winner is guaranteed a shot at reigning Middleweight champion Anderson Silva later in the year after he is healed up from his injuries. A win for Sonnen would allow him the chance to avenge his previous loss where he was just a couple minutes away from winning the title, but would have likely been stripped of it seeing that he had to face multiple legal battles that kept him out of action for over a year. For Munoz this would pit him against his former training partner in Silva, and would be interesting seeing that Munoz knows his strengths and tendencies. For Bisping vs Maia, the winner is made the #1 contender to fight the winner of Silva vs Sonnen/Munoz. In the situation where Silva could be out longer than expected or unable to defend his title within a certain time frame, the winners of Sonne/Munoz and Bisping/Maia could fight later on again for #1 title contention or even for an Interim title.

UFC 143 Rearranged Early. GSP out, DIAZ/CONDIT Headline.
Early on Wednesday, December 7, UFC President Dana White announced that reigning Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre had suffered a serious injury blowing his ACL and required surgery. This has now forced St. Pierre out of his rescheduled bout with former Strikeforce Welterweight champion Nick Diaz. The main event for UFC 143 will now pit Diaz against former/final WEC Welterweight champion Carlos Condit for the UFC Interim-Welterweight title with St. Pierre likely to be out of action for some time needing surgery. Condit was originally slated to fight in the co-main event for UFC 143 against TUF1 alumni and contender Josh Koscheck in a bout where a win would have guaranteed him a shot at the winner of St. Pierre vs Diaz. At this time it is unknown if Koscheck will still be part of the card with a new opponent or be reassigned to another card. Interesting match ups that could come Koscheck's way include the winner of Diego Sanchez vs Jake Ellenberger which takes place a week after UFC 143, or the winner of Thiago Alves vs Martin Kampmann which takes place a month after.
The fallout of St. Pierre is a continuation of problems that have plagued the UFC Welterweight title picture over the course of several months. The trouble started originally when the bout between St. Pierre and Diaz was first set to headline UFC 137 in October, but the bout was scrapped and Diaz was replaced with Condit after failing to appear for two pre-fight press conferences weeks before the scheduled event, which also removed Condit from the scheduled co-main event against former two-division champion B.J. Penn. Just a couple days following the shuffling of the card, it was announced that the new co-main event would pit Diaz against Penn. Just over a week before the event St. Pierre suffered an injury to his leg while training and was forced out of the new bout with Condit, and forced Condit off the card as well with the UFC promising that he would still get his shot at the title. With the main event falling out Diaz vs Penn was promoted to headline the card, which many believed was the real main event to begin with. When the bout finally came it followed what many felt was a dismal card to watch, and when the bout was over both fighters out on one of the greatest fights of the year and garnered a consensus among analysts that the main event saved the card from being a let down. In the cage in the post-fight interview immediately after earning the Unanimous Decision win, Diaz called out St. Pierre saying he was faking being injured, which prompted St. Pierre to ask UFC President Dana White to reschedule the original bout with Diaz instead of Condit next. Immediately at the post-fight conference White announced that the superfight between St. Pierre and Diaz was now set to headline UFC 143 for Super-Bowl weekend. Now a couple months prior to the scheduled event, St. Pierre has suffered a torn ACL that will require surgery and will keep him out of action for some time. Diaz will now fight Condit as the new main event for the division's Interim title in the new main event. This makes it the second time in a row in just his second bout being back with the promotion that Diaz was originally meant to fight for the division title and has needed to take another fight.

TUF15 Coaches Assigned: TEAM CRUZ s TEAM FABER
The fifteenth season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) will be the first season to appear on FX as part of the recently signed deal between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and FOX network. As part of the deal, the reality competition series TUF will now move from it's original home channel SpikeTV over to FX where it will be reformatted and presented to an even bigger audience. After weeks of speculation, UFC President Dana White announced via Twitter Tuesday, December 6 that the head coaching positions for the newest season in the series will be reigning Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz and #1 contender Urijah Faber. Like past seasons the two will coach opposite of each other leading their own teams of UFC hopefuls who will compete for a chance to earn a six-figure contract with the UFC. In this fifteenth season there will again be two weight classes competing making it one six-figure contract on the line for each division. The competitors will either be competing as Welterweights (170-156lbs) or as Lightweights (155-146lbs). The season premiere is scheduled for March 9, 2012 with a two-hour episode starting at 9PM ET/PT that is likely to show contestants competing for a spot in the tournament. Starting the following week the show will air at 10PM ET/PT and will remain on that time slot for the remainder of the season over thirteen weeks. While the original format and production of the show had the tournament happen over several weeks where everything was recorded from what would occur in the house where the competitors stayed and the fights as part of the tournament. Over the several weeks the fighters competed while being secluded away from the outside world cut off from television, internet access, and unable to communicate with anybody outside the house with the exception of serious situations a fighter need be contacted for. After filming, the competitors would be kept under confidentiality unable to give away fight results and reveal who would be competing in the finale. For the new seasons that will be featured on FX, the series will be reformatted where instead of seeing prerecorded tournament bouts, each week the bouts will be aired live towards the end of the episode. To showcase the fighters competing in the featured bout each episode, footage prior to the lie bout will resemble the format done for "UFC Primetime" where the two fighters will be emphasized to get to know them specifically so fans can learn about their history and waht drives them in their efforts to become a fighter in the UFC and a future champion. As an added aspect of reformatting in the series, live play-by-play commentating will be introduced for the first time to the show where as before there was nobody commentating on the fights and all viewers would here was the action in the fight, the coaches advising their fighters, and other fighters on the side cheering on their teammate in action. Assuming one of the two roles in commentating during the fights will be recently signed analyst Jon Anik who previously worked on ESPN's MMA Live and also served as a play-by-play commentator before for BellatorFC during their first season. The second play-by-play analyst has yet to be named, but they are expected to be a former or still competing fighter from the UFC.
Cruz and Faber will fight each other after the conclusion of the season for the Bantamweight title in what will be the third and final match between the two with the score even between them 1-1. Sonnen vs Munoz Now "Official" For UFC On FOX 2 Co-Main Event
It is now official that top Middleweight contender and former collegiate wrestler Chael Sonnen (26-11-1) will now take on heavy hitting fellow former collegiate wrestler Mark Munoz (12-2-0) as part of UFC On FOX 2. While originally believed to be set as the headlining bout for this event, Sonnen vs Munoz is instead set as the co-main event. This confirmation come days after Sonnen himself claimed that he was not set to fight Munoz and had hinted that he would be watching the then upcoming bout between contender Michael Bisping and Jason Miller with vested interest. With the bout now set between Sonnen and Munoz, the victor is expected to declared the division's #1 contender who will face reigning champion Anderson Silva after he is fully healed from his current injuries. Sonnen will come into this bout following a dominant Rnd2 Submission over former WEC Light Heavyweight champion Brian Stann at UFC 136: Edgar vs Maynard III that came after a fourteen month layoff that followed after his failed attempt to capture the title from Silva. Munoz will come into this bout riding his first four fight win streak in the UFC that includes a Unanimous Decision over fellow former collegiate wrestler Aaron Simpson, a quick Rnd1 KO over TUF7 finalist C.B. Dolloway, a Unanimous Decision over elite BJJ practitioner Demian Maia, and a recent Rnd2 TKO over veteran Chris Leben at UFC 138: Leben vs Munoz. Coincidentally both fighters have competed against each other before while still collegiate wrestlers, where Munoz was the victor and claimed that Sonnen cheated in an effort to steal the win. With Sonnen considered the superior wrestler and Munoz considered the better striker coming into this bout, this could make for an interesting match up. Sonnen will look to prove he is the superior wrestler and get the fight to the ground as soon as he can and avoid the power of Munoz. Munoz will look to keep the fight standing where he will have a significant striking and power advantage and be prepared to prove his takedown defense to do so.
