Reported by MMAWeekly.com, a heavyweight bout is now expected to take place as part of the main vard for UFC 143: Diaz vs Condit when credentialed BJJ black belt Fabricio Werdum takes on fellow BJJ clack belt and TUF10 winner Roy Nelson. Werdum will come into this bout following what some fans consider a controversial Unanimous Decision loss to Strikeforce Heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem as part of the quarterfinals in the Heavyweight Grand Prix at Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum II that snapped a three fight win streak, which included being the first fighter to own a definitive win over longtime consensus #1 Heavyweight Fedor Elelianenko. Nelson will come into this bout off a rebound Rnd3 TKO win over veteran Mirko Cro-Cop at UFC 137: Penn vs Diaz that snapped a two fight losing streak, which included a Unanimous Decision loss to Junior dos Santos for #1 contendership in the division that earned him great respect and a Unanimous Decision loss to former Heavyweight champion Frank Mir. Being a big name in Strikeforce having been the first fighter in almost ten years to own a victory over Emelianenko, being a veteran of the sport, and being a highly recognized BJJ practitioner in the sport, Werdum is a big catch from Strikeforce making his return to the UFC since being released in late 2008. Nelson is a veteran himself recognized as a strong BJJ practitioner, was the inaugural and only IFL Heavyweight champion, and has made himself a popular figure in MMA with his personality and endurance being one of only two fighters to go the full distance with powerful knock out specialist Junior dos Santos.
At this time, the main card for UFC 143: Diaz vs Condit stands now with three bouts, with others still rumored or not yet confirmed to be part of the main card.
Main Card bouts:
Main Event (Interim Welterweight Title bout): Nick Diaz vs Carlos Condit
Co-Main Event: Josh Koscheck vs Mike Pierce
Fabricio Werdum vs Roy Nelson
